A Mind Like Water

Aug 17, 2019

“Imagine throwing a pebble into a still pond.

How does the water respond? The answer is, totally appropriately to the force and the mass of the input; then it returns to calm. It does not overreact or under react.” (David Allen, Getting Things Done)

Are you letting something you could complete in 5 minutes catapult you into panic? (Overreacting.)

Are you breaking promises to yourself and telling yourself it isn’t a big deal? (Under reacting.)

What if we all had minds more like water? Don’t overreact. Don’t under react.

Instead, react appropriately to the input.

This requires one to cultivate a space between thinking about something and your reaction. Like the theme of all of these posts, practice growing that space. And then, practice reacting appropriately depending on the force of the input.
